Mobile Education Center (MEC)
AFY encourages education as a pathway to personal freedom and well-being. However, in providing youth with C-BASE programming for 20 years, AFY has learned that transportation and access to services are two of the biggest barriers in obtaining an alternative high school diploma. AFY created the Mobile Education Center to deliver educational services across Oahu and restore hope in our valuable youth.
AFY staff performs community outreach to identify truant youth during school hours and/or by referrals from community members. The MEC aims to reconnect these youth to their traditional school or, if this is not possible, to an alternative education program. The vehicle used for MEC enables AFY staff to provide youth with resources, such as laptops, Wi-Fi, and a safe space, that may otherwise be inaccessible to them at home.
