Student Transition Convention

It’s a BIG THING! Reaching 6,000 students statewide and helping them “move on up” from elementary to middleschool. Every spring, AFY conducts the Annual Student Transition Convention on Oahu and the Neighboring Islands (Big Island, Kauai, and Maui) to ease their anxieties about transitioning from childhood to adolescence.

The program encourages a healthy transition for 5th and 6th graders as they experience the physical and emotional changes while coping with the uncertainties of growing up. The best thing about the convention? It reassures students that they’re not alone, and that they matter very much! The STC helps students get off on the right foot and stay out of trouble as they navigate the minefield of early adolescence.

Dean of Hawaii entertainers, Frank De Lima, and American Idol celebrity, Jordan Segundo, guarantee a fun-filled convention. In 2011, the STC had 5,707 students from 72 public schools on their feet, laughing and cheering, as they focused on the choices and challenges of facing peer pressure, avoiding bullies, making friends, and adapting to changes in schools.

“What I liked best about the Student Transition Convention was Frank De Lima and tools for transition. The personal experiences and stories were good and very heartfelt. All the entertainment was enjoyable for the kids. Thank you for another great convention.”
-Nanaikapono Elementary School Teacher

“What I liked best about the Student Transition Convention was the part when we asked questions because it helped me out. Frank De Lima was awesome. Uncle Frank was acting out these students that was troublemakers and turned out good and successful when they grew up. I liked that everyone cared how we felt. I hope that in the future others will enjoy this too.”
