7-a-side rugby is played in over 90 countries worldwide and is the most exciting brand of rugby because of its speed and finesse. There are basically 7 players on a team who spend 7 minutes per half for each game. That means the entire game takes just 14 minutes. It’s more than just rugby. It’s about connecting with each other and feeling good about themselves no matter what their limitations are.
In 2005, AFY Vice President McKay Schwenke, who is also the tournament director, organized the first-ever 7-a-side youth rugby tournament in Hawaii, partnering up with Aloha Youth rugby. The aim was to help bring neighborhoods and communities closer together in the more tangible spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship through rugby. The annual event has grown into Hawaii’s premier international youth rugby tournament. “Win or lose, shake hands and walk off feeling good,” is the tournament’s motto. The 2007 tournament was historical with the debut of high school girls’ rugby. In recent years, teams from as far away as Canada, New Zealand and Pennsylvania have played with our local teams from the Big Island, Maui, Kalihi, Radford, Waipahu, Laie, and Kahuku.
AFY’s International Aloha Youth Rugby 7-a-Side Tournament is held in March every year. Youth rugby clinics to build teams, as well as to teach and train coaches and volunteers, are also offered. It’s a speedy, fun, safe, and exciting spectator sport to introduce to your kids!
